She invites us to lay our eye level with her smallest leaf, and take an insect view of its plain. Thoreau

I grew up in the most simple of life. My father was a brick mason, a builder. We had little, but wanted for nothing. It was in this atmosphere that I began to cherish nature and growing things. Somewhere, in the pursuit of a “successful life?” I lost the sheer joy of watching a honey bee land gently on a clover bloom or a hummingbird flutter its wings hundreds of times hovering almost still in front of a flower filled with the nectar only nature can create. If we stop and look at nature, the trees, the flowers, the streams, the oceans, the mountains, or even the tiny grain of sand on a beach, is it so difficult to believe there is some “higher power” than man? I am not about to preach - we all believe what we want. No one needs my approval.

Seeking approval, however, can lead us nowhere but where someone else wants us to go. That is where I got lost. To some degree, I am still lost. I no longer seek approval, except to keep a job to keep things going. See, still lost. But I am improving. See, it is not until a man is lost that he can find himself. We are not born lost. We only lose ourselves when we begin to follow, seek approval, or climb a ladder to … where?

To find myself again, I really had to let go of a lot of things. I could still let go of a lot of things. Now I feel the best when I am in the company of Thor and my partner. It is a comfort to sit in our quiet humble surroundings hearing only the rhythm of the keystrokes of my partner working on his website or our dog Thor bursting into his spontaneous howling song when he hears any TV soundbite including horns or strings.

If I get really lost, now I go back to nature. In our natural surroundings, such as a pleasant yard or garden, or even just next to a plant in bloom, we can revel in both the simplicities and complexities of nature itself. Wow, it is so vast! ”Nature is full of genius, full of the divinity; so that not a snowflake escapes its fashioning hand” (Thoreau). Nature flows at its own pace. As much as I try to hasten that first tomato of the season, that plant it comes from has its own time frame. Sure man has done his best to control it through genetic manipulation (to enhance profit no less – the root of all evil – let it go Keith, that digression is a genie in a bottle all by itself), but still cannot make a tomato without the plant first. Whatever, I have to get pleasure from watching that first tomato grow and ripen, because my partner will snatch and eat it while I am at work anyway.

Share your favorite nature photos and your stories. I can get lost in the beauties of nature, and find myself at the same time!

Alas! how little does the memory of these human inhabitants enhance the beauty of the landscape! (Henry David Thoreau)

Today I watched a film called Waste Land. It was about how people who are working in Earth’s largest garbage dump, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, manage to live eek an existence, and for a very short time, have their lives portrayed as beautiful works of art. Vik Muniz, a Brazilian artist known for using unconventional materials to create portraits of marginalized people, set out to “paint” the catadores (pickers) with the garbage they spent their days sorting through. But upon meeting the amazing characters who work at the landfill, he decides to turn the project into a collaborative project with the catadores themselves. Muniz photographs the pickers individually at the landfill and then projects the images he’s captured onto the floor of a massive warehouse nearby. Then he works with the catadores to gather recyclable items from the dump and use these discarded things to recreate the images on the floor. In the end, vibrant, complex, and essentially human portraits emerge, revealing both dignity and despair as the catadores begin to re imagine their lives. Throughout this process, both the dignity and despair of the catadores (pickers) is revealed as they begin to re-imagine their lives. Waste Land was an absolute pleasure to watch, a truly moving film and “offers stirring evidence of the transformative power of art and the alchemy of the human spirit”.

As much as I like what Congressman Weiner stands for and fights for, and his clear outspoken spirit, I encourage you to advise Congressman Weiner to resign. I am not one of Mr. Weiner’s constituents; I am a member of the Democratic Party and promote social values and economic policies for the good of all, not a few. Mr. Weiner has apologized for the pictures and his lies of denial, but I should be able to hold our representatives to a higher standard.

I really think that the Democratic Party cannot afford to expend political capital with those we would like to come back and vote Democratic in the next election. If Mr. Weiner stays, his vote can be effective, but he will be the target of the news media for who knows how long. There could be an ethics investigation, and this just gives people who are looking for something better another reason to look outside of the Democratic Party with their next opportunity to vote. I live in Georgia, and we both know my state is unlikely to land in the Democratic majority anytime soon, but what progress is being made here can be set back light years with what some would consider lack of moral judgments by a continued sitting Congressman, no matter where he resides.

We should stand for family values, whether that be a traditional conservative view or a more modern view accepting of families consisting of those not normally following traditional roles. I am a gay male living with a partner, who has no right to marry, and in this state, limited legal protections at all. But I encourage those of my sexual orientation to discontinue the uses of open sexual photography posted in mainstream media as it may put those who may someday get to vote on an equality proposition a reason to point to that type of display as “common” among our community. We must present ourselves as valuable citizens and not allow actions by a few be the prevailing thoughts of us at the polls. This applies to the Democratic Party as a whole, and I do not want people thinking of Mr. Weiner’s irresponsible actions to be the prevailing thoughts of the Democrat representatives on the ballot at the polls.

We know no matter how apologetic Mr. Weiner is, this issue will not die until he goes away. It will be thrust upon us by the news media until it is no longer an issue, and future opponents of Democratic politicians on ballots in the future will point to this issue as one of the reasons we should not vote for the Democrat. I am for freedom on the internet, but Mr. Weiner should have used better judgment. And that in itself makes me wonder what type of judgment he may use on future issues.

I rely on your role as Leader of the Democratic Congress, and I know Mr. Weiner is a valuable ally on many issues. But I believe he will be a drag on the Democratic Party as long as he is a member of Congress. I wish this were not the case, but I believe it is and will continue to be.

Sincerely,
